Chapter 29

Ally fussed and fidgeted with the confines of the satin bodice. The boning felt like a prison to her rounding shape. Though her body was still slender, Ally was fuller and curvier in places she hadn’t been a few weeks ago. She caressed the intricate beading and stroked the voluminous skirt of her dream dress. Kylie watched her carefully as her eyes welled with salty liquid. She blinked back the sorrow she felt for her cousin. She knew Ally had had a long day and was barely holding it together. Ally looked behind to her cousin through the reflection of her mirror and politely smiled at her, “I’m okay, you know,” Ally whispered, more to herself then to Kylie, seeming to need the reassurance of her own voice.

Kylie stepped closer and rested her chin on Ally’s shoulder, wrapping her arms around her waist. Her chin bobbed up and down as she spoke trying to keep Ally calm and possibly bolster her strength and resolve for what lies ahead. As she gazed in to the reflection of her cousin’s mirror, Kylie remembered the determination Ally showed when they looked for her gown. “The centerpiece of every wedding,” Ally chanted as they entered each and every boutique. “The dress sets the tone, and the tone has to be perfect!”

A self-confessed Say Yes to The Dress addict, Ally refused to “settle” for anything less than the Ah-ha moment showcased on the reality show. Kylie was her Randy and she loved every minute of it.

“Do you remember how hard we looked for this dress, the hours we spent trolling numerous boutiques and surfing the web. The hours, oh the exhausting hours in the umpteen fitting rooms, and just when I thought the perfect dress didn’t exist, you found it.” Kylie tilted her head, smiling at her best friend.

“I remember.” Ally answered, rubbing her chilled arms.

Kylie swallowed loudly, forcing down the bubble of emotion, trying to stay strong. “I was so honored to share your epic dress safari. It meant more to me than I could ever say.”

“It’s funny, but I felt the same way about Lamb…” Ally paused. The term of endearment stung her ears as she said it. Instead of them being blissfully happy, there was an awkwardness and painful distance between them. The name just didn’t seem to fit him anymore. That realization forced out a saddened sigh. “Um (Oh?), Kevin.” She continued. “I tried on a few disastrous frocks, boyfriends, before I found ‘the one.’ Only now,” Ally questioned, “I think I might have been right about one, and it wasn’t the boy.”

Ally smirked painfully back into the mirror. Kylie returned an equally sorrowful smile.

“Oh, honey,” she gasped, rubbing her arms, hugging her tightly from behind. Their eyes never faltered from each other’s. Their sisterly bond was never stronger than in that silent moment of loss and pain.

Josie knocked on the door and entered to help the girls wrangle Ally’s elaborate dress. She hugged Ally tightly, making the moment a bit awkward.
